Hamilton braille music transcription produced for the Library of Congress NLS

Hamilton

Bringing Hamilton to Braille

One of Patrick Janson’s most notable projects involved transcribing vocal selections from the Broadway musical Hamilton for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled.

The score presented unusual challenges for braille transcription, including rapid transitions between singing and rap, overlapping vocal parts, intricate piano accompaniment, and complex musical notation.

Patrick described the project as a labor of love and an honor to transcribe. The finished work became a four-volume braille music score containing vocal lines, piano accompaniment, and chord symbols.

The project was significant enough that the Library of Congress featured Patrick and his transcription work.
